  • Professional Biography

Over his nearly thirty year career as a trial attorney, Mike has successfully tried dozens of cases in Rhode Island State and Federal courts, developing a reputation for handling high profile, high risk cases. Mike's practice has focused particularly on civil rights litigation, defending municipalities and police officers in matters involving excessive force, wrongful death, and wrongful arrest. His clients include the City of Providence Police Department, which he has represented for over 25 years. In addition to his municipal and law enforcement defense practice, Mike has successfully represented hundreds of individuals, businesses, and insurers in a wide array of litigation matters including legal malpractice, professional liability, personal injury, and product liability.

Employing his extensive jury trial experience, Mike founded Verdict Shaper, LLC and its popular "Trial - A Path to Victory" series, which incorporates his unique trial strategies in seminar programs and materials. He routinely lectures in the greater Providence and Boston areas and has produced text books and DVDs on trial practice techniques. Attendees at his programs have uniformly rated them as unique, highly informative, and entertaining.

    Notable Experience and Recognition

In addition to his trial skills, Mike has an impressive background in business and financial matters. He was one of the top ten students in his graduating class at Providence College and was awarded the John J. Gula Award for finishing first in the Business Division with a degree in Accounting.

Mike has been recognized by his peers as a Rhode Island Super Lawyer and a Top Lawyer in New England for several years.

In a case that drew statewide and national attention, Mike obtained a defense verdict for the City of Providence and several of its police officers in a $20 million wrongful death case after a five week Federal jury trial which featured original members of the O.J. Simpson "dream team" as opposing counsel, as well as nationally recognized experts in police "friendly fire" shootings.
